The Child Development Program ensures that all enrolled children meet the minimum standards for immunizations in accordance with the California School Immunization Law. Additional information is available at www.dhs.gov/ps/dcdc/izgroup.
The Head Start/Early Head Start Health Advisory Committee meeting and luncheon takes place each spring and fall. This meeting is a opportunity to discuss Head Start/Early Head Start business as it relates to the child development and health component. It is a time to bring representatives from community agencies, as well as members of the medical and dental community together with our Child Development Program parents/guardians and staff.
Nutrition Assessments and Counseling services are offered to child development families. Assessment and nutrition counseling services are offered to parents of any child at nutritional risk. This includes children who require any therapeutic diet, or are underweight, overweight, or anemic.
Medication Policy
All prescription and non-prescription medications will be administered only with written approval by the child’s parent and the child’s physician, in accordance with label directions. Medications are stored in a locked container and refrigerated when needed. A medication log is kept by staff for each child receiving medication at the center. Medication needs to be in the original prescribed container with pharmaceutical label.
Daily Health Check
A daily health check will be performed to assure children are free from contagious diseases when participating in any Child Development Program. A teacher greets the child and parent/guardian upon arrival at the center. The parent guardian is required to remain at the center while the teacher conducts the health check and the child is cleared to stay at the center.
Illness
The Child Development Program adheres to the Center for Disease Control Communicable Disease Guide exclusion criteria for child care programs. If a child becomes ill while at the center, they will be isolated from the other children and the parent/guardian will be contacted. It is the parent’s/guardian responsibility to make immediate arrangements for the child to be picked up. If the parent/guardian cannot be reached, an alternate adult whose signature appears on the emergency card will be contacted.
Car Seat Safety
Effective January1, 2005, California CPS Law (Vehicle Code 27360 and 27360.5) will cite the parent/guardian for each child who is not properly restrained in the rear seat until the child is 6 years old or older, or weighs 60 pounds or more. Please ensure this requirement is met by the person transporting your child.
Sight For Students Program
The Child Development Program collaborates with the Sight For Students vision program. This program provides free vision eye care services to qualifying students whose families’ income is up to 200% of the federal poverty level.
Vision and Hearing Screening
Vision and hearing screenings are performed on all Head Start children within 45 days of enrollment. Vision and hearing screenings are performed on children enrolled in the Child Development Program who have identified concerns.
