CalSAFE
(California School Age Families Education Program)

 

Cal-SAFE is a comprehensive, community-linked school program for expectant and parenting students and their children.

 

Enrollment Criteria

  • Available to any expectant and/or parenting student, male or female age 18 years and younger who attends an El Dorado County public school.
  • Student must be enrolled in a full day El Dorado County School to qualify for ancillary support and child care services during school hours.
  • If a student reaches age 19 and has been enrolled in the Cal-SAFE Program before reaching his/her 19th birthday, the student may continue enrollment for one additional semester.
  • Enrollment in the Cal-SAFE Program qualifies student's children for free child care services until the age of five years or entry into kindergarten, whichever comes first.
  • Available to eligible students with an active Special Education IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for as long as the IEP is active.

Ancillary Services

  • Connections and referrals to community services and support providers.
  • Support through Early Head Start, promoting positive family health and development.
  • Field trips to various community resource agencies and other academic settings, which includes conferences and workshops.
  • Children of enrolled parents will receive services based on assessed developmental and health needs.
  • Students receive daily classes in parenting and life skills as part of their school day, which includes such topics as health and nutrition for parent and child, child development, home economics, literacy and community resources.

 

Infant/Toddler Program

An infant/toddler program is available to provide child care for enrolled adolescent parents to use while they attend a full day school program.  On the Western Slope the infant/toddler program is available at the El Dorado County Office of Education's Ken Lowry Child Development Center. In the South Lake Tahoe area parents may access the infant/toddler program located at the Mt. Tallac High School campus.

Infants and toddlers are cared for by trained Child Development staff who receive ongoing training on such topics as infant, child and adolescent development, health and nutrition, establishing environments for group care settings and social-emotional development.

 

Program Goals

  • Increased number of students graduating from high school and transitioning into post secondary education, including a technical school or the world of work.
  • Improved parenting skills.
  • Fewer incidences of repeat births to adolescent mothers.
  • Increased number of healthy births (birth weight) among enrolled expectant students.
  • Decreased dependency on welfare.
  • Improved access to support services related to school success for enrolled adolescent students.
